Know your cosmetics: How to read the INCI of products

The list of ingredients or INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) of a product is the key to understanding what your cosmetic actually contains. Knowing how to read it not only allows you to make more informed decisions, but also avoids the use of products that can harm your skin or the environment.
In this blog, we'll explore what INCI is, how to interpret it, and what to look for (or avoid) when choosing your cosmetics.
What is INCI?
INCI is a standard nomenclature used worldwide to list the ingredients of cosmetic products. It appears on the product packaging or label and allows for precise identification of what the product contains. Ingredients are usually ordered from highest to lowest quantity, meaning that the first components listed are the most predominant in the formula.
How to read the INCI of a cosmetic product?
Reading the INCI may seem intimidating at first, but with these steps it will be easier:
- Identify the main ingredients:
- The first ingredients represent the largest percentage of the product. If you see water ("Aqua"), it means that it is the base of the cosmetic.
- Recognizes active ingredients:
- Look for common names of ingredients that you know benefit your skin, such as "Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice" or "Butyrospermum Parkii Butter."
- Avoid toxins:
- Some ingredients, such as parabens, sulfates and silicones, can cause irritation or long-term damage.
- Look for certifications:
- Symbols such as ECOCERT or COSMOS assure you that the product complies with natural or organic cosmetics standards.
Ingredients to avoid
Although skin type can vary from person to person, there are certain ingredients that are best avoided in general:
- Parabens: Preservatives that may be hormone disruptors.
- Phthalates: Used to set fragrances, they can be toxic.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): May cause dryness and irritation.
Natural ingredients you should look for
- Jojoba oil: Moisturizing and compatible with all skin types.
- Shea butter: Deeply nourishes and is ideal for dry skin.
- Chamomile, oat, lavender or calendula extract: Soothing and perfect for sensitive skin.
